Background
modus | zad – Center for Applied Research on Deradicalization is dedicated to improve social responsiveness to new extremist developments and actors. To do so, we offer applied research in the field of extremism prevention, focusing primarily on the dissemination of extremist content on social media and other digital platforms.
Your tasks
To strengthen our team, we are looking for a Data Analyst to coordinate the collection of social media data and text data analysis in Python and/or R.
Ongoing projects of modus | zad focus on the collection of online content containing extremist and conspiracy ideologies, and on its quantitative and qualitative analysis. Your main task is to expand computer-aided data collection and analysis across projects and to establish a long-term technical infrastructure. In addition, your task portfolio can lead to one or more modus | zad projects including organizational and budgetary responsibility.
- Data collection: in particular collection of meta and text data from TikTok and YouTube; later other platforms (e.g. Telegram)
- Data analysis: in particular meta and text data; Focus: Recognizing extremist content and monitoring the frequency of different conspiracy narratives, as well as processing findings in a generally understandable way
- Technical infrastructure: Creation and maintenance of a database to manage this data
Your profile
- Completed university degree (BA/MA) in the field of social sciences, computer science or a related field
- Advanced programming skills in Python and/or R
- Experience with data collection through web scraping & API querying, especially Telegram and TikTok data
- Experience with text data analysis and natural language processing, especially using language models and for classification
- Experience in effectively communicating analysis results to a wide audience
- Experience in setting up and maintaining digital infrastructure, especially databases
- Strong ability to work independently as well as to work in a multidisciplinary team
- very good communication skills
- Desirable:
- Background knowledge on extremism and conspiracy ideologies
- Knowledge of Arabic or Turkish
